Hot-Dip Galvanized Steel Angle

Hot-Dip Galvanized Steel Angle is a hot-rolled L-section steel protected by an overall zinc coating for outdoor and moisture-prone service. Q235B and Q355B grades are available in equal and unequal angle profiles, with common sizes from 20×20 mm to 200×200 mm and thicknesses from 2–20 mm. The material is supplied for solar structures, power projects, curtain walls, guardrails, equipment supports, warehouses and general steel fabrication.

Hot-Dip Galvanized Steel Angle is made from hot-rolled carbon structural angle steel and coated with zinc after section forming and required fabrication. It is available in equal and unequal angles, with Q235B and Q355B steel grades.

Equal angle has two legs of the same width. Unequal angle has different leg widths for applications where the connection or load arrangement requires different bearing dimensions.

Q235B and Q355B

Q235B is commonly used for support frames, guardrails, equipment supports, warehouse structures and general steel fabrication.

Q355B provides higher material strength for applications with higher loads, larger spans or more demanding structural requirements.

The steel grade should be selected together with the angle size, thickness, span, load and connection design.

Hot-Dip Galvanizing

The angle steel is processed and surface-prepared before immersion in molten zinc at approximately 450–460°C.

Production sequence:

Hot-rolled angle steel → incoming inspection → straightening → cutting / fabrication → degreasing → pickling → rinsing → fluxing → drying → hot-dip galvanizing → cooling → passivation → final straightening and sizing → zinc coating inspection → final inspection → packing.

Pickling removes rust and mill scale so that the zinc coating can form properly on the steel surface.

Zinc Coating Options

Environment Coating Direction
Normal outdoor exposure 60–120 μm
Humid outdoor environment Increased coating may be specified
Coastal salt exposure 150–200 μm may be specified
Chemical or severe corrosion Project-specific coating requirement

The coating requirement should be stated in the purchase order instead of specifying only “hot-dip galvanized.” For example: Q355B / 100 × 100 × 8 mm / 12 m / hot-dip galvanized / 150–200 μm.

Galvanized Steel Angle Structure

Galvanized Steel Angle for Outdoor Structure

Cutting and Fabrication

Fixed-length cutting, punching, drilling, bending, beveling and grinding can be arranged according to drawings.

For fabricated components, major cutting and hole processing can be completed before galvanizing so the finished part receives zinc protection after processing.

If cutting, drilling or welding is performed after galvanizing, the exposed steel or heat-affected area should be cleaned and repaired with a suitable zinc-rich coating.

Quality Inspection

Inspection covers both the base steel and the galvanized coating.

  • Steel grade and material certificate
  • Leg width and thickness
  • Straightness and section geometry
  • Fixed-length accuracy
  • Zinc coating thickness and coverage
  • Surface condition and exposed steel
  • Hole position and dimensions for fabricated parts

Material certificates and galvanizing inspection records can be supplied for project orders. Third-party inspection can also be arranged when required.

Galvanized Angle vs Black Angle

Black angle steel has no zinc coating and normally requires painting or another corrosion-protection system for outdoor use.

Hot-dip galvanized angle steel is coated at the factory before shipment, which removes the need for a separate full-surface painting process at the installation site.

For dry indoor applications, black angle steel may be sufficient where permitted by the project specification. For outdoor or moisture-exposed structures, the corrosion-protection requirement should be specified with the steel grade and section.

Angle Steel vs Flat Bar and Channel

Angle steel provides two perpendicular legs and is commonly used for braces, brackets, frames and connection members.

Flat bar provides a single flat surface and is used for straps, plates, reinforcement and other flat connection components.

Channel steel has a deeper open section and is generally used where greater section depth is required for structural support.

The choice depends on the load, connection method, available space and required section properties.

Project Applications

Distributed PV Support

40 × 40 mm and 50 × 50 mm galvanized angle steel was supplied for residential and commercial rooftop PV support applications. The material was specified with increased zinc protection for outdoor exposure.

Municipal Road Improvement

Standard 6 m galvanized angle steel was supplied for guardrail and enclosure support work. The material was delivered to the required length and checked for section dimensions before installation.

Coastal Chemical-Plant Equipment Supports

200 μm zinc-coated galvanized angle steel was supplied for outdoor equipment support structures in a coastal industrial environment with salt-laden air and light chemical exposure.

Export Supply

Hot-Dip Galvanized Steel Angle can be supplied in 6 m, 9 m and 12 m standard lengths or cut to project dimensions. Equal and unequal angles, specified zinc coatings and fabricated components can be arranged according to drawings.

For export shipments, steel angles are bundled and reinforced for ocean transportation. Moisture-resistant packing can be used to reduce handling damage and white-rust risk during transportation and storage.

How to Specify Galvanized Angle Steel

A purchase specification should include:

Steel grade + angle type + leg dimensions + thickness + length + zinc coating + fabrication requirements.

Example:

Q235B / Equal Angle / 50 × 50 × 5 mm / 6 m / Hot-Dip Galvanized / specified zinc coating / pre-punched according to drawing.

For project orders, drawings can be provided for fixed-length cutting, hole positions and other fabrication requirements.

FAQ

Q1. Can you supply equal and unequal angle steel?

Yes. Both equal and unequal angle sections can be supplied according to size and project requirements.

Q2. What sizes are available?

Common sizes range from approximately 20 × 20 mm to 200 × 200 mm, with thicknesses of 2–20 mm. Other sizes can be discussed according to the required specification.

Q3. What lengths are available?

Standard lengths are 6 m, 9 m and 12 m. Fixed-length cutting is available.

Q4. What zinc coating thickness can you provide?

The common zinc coating range is 60–120 μm. Higher coating requirements of 150–200 μm can be specified for demanding outdoor environments.

Q5. Can galvanized angle steel be used in coastal areas?

Yes. Coastal projects should specify the zinc coating according to the salt exposure. A higher coating such as 150–200 μm can be considered for stronger exposure.

Q6. Can you cut and punch angle steel before galvanizing?

Yes. Fixed-length cutting, punching, drilling and other fabrication can be completed before galvanizing according to drawings.

Q7. What happens if galvanized angle steel is welded?

Welding removes the zinc coating around the heated area. After welding, the affected area should be cleaned and repaired with a suitable zinc-rich coating.

Q8. Can galvanized angle steel be used for PV structures?

Yes. It can be used for selected PV supports, braces, fixing frames and auxiliary structures. The section and zinc coating should match the project design and exposure conditions.

Q9. Which is more suitable, Q235B or Q355B?

Q235B is commonly used for conventional structural and support applications. Q355B is used where higher material strength is required. The final selection should follow the structural design.

Q10. What quality documents can be provided?

Material certificates and galvanizing inspection records can be supplied according to the order. Third-party inspection can also be arranged when required.
