For outdoor steel structures, the problem with ordinary black channel steel is rarely its initial strength. The bigger issue is what happens after months or years of rain, condensation and salt exposure. Hot-Dip Galvanized Steel Channel uses Q235B or Q355B hot-rolled channel steel as the base and applies an overall hot-dip zinc coating to the completed section, including the outer faces, inner groove, edges and ends. The result is a load-bearing steel section that can be used directly in exposed structures with less field coating and maintenance work.
Hot-Dip Galvanized Steel Channel is a hot-rolled U-shaped steel section with a web and two flanges. The listed sizes include 6#, 8#, 10#, 12#, 14#a and 16#a, with Q235B and Q355B available. The channel is processed and then hot-dip galvanized for outdoor and corrosion-prone applications.
The open U-shaped section provides a practical connection surface for brackets, bolts, braces and equipment supports. The galvanized coating protects the steel surface from atmospheric corrosion.

Other a/b channel sections can be supplied according to drawings and project requirements. Fixed-length cutting, punching, drilling, bending and other agreed processing are available.
Q235B or Q355B
Q235B is commonly used for support frames, equipment supports, warehouse structures, guardrails and general steel fabrication.
Q355B provides higher material strength and can be specified for heavier loads, larger spans and more demanding structural applications.
Material grade and channel size should be selected together with the span, load, support spacing and structural calculation.

≥85 μm
Local minimum
≥65 μm

Heavy-corrosion option
≥100 μm
For coastal, chemical or other highly corrosive environments, a thicker zinc coating can be specified according to the project requirements.
For purchasing, the coating requirement should be stated together with the steel grade, channel size and length, for example: Q355B / 12# / hot-dip galvanized / average zinc ≥85 μm / 6 m.
Production Process
The channel is produced first and galvanized after the required cutting and mechanical processing.
The zinc bath is typically maintained at around 450°C. The zinc coating forms through the reaction between the prepared steel surface and molten zinc.

Cutting, Drilling and Welding
Fixed-length cutting, punching and drilling can normally be completed before galvanizing so that the processed member receives zinc protection after fabrication.
If the galvanized channel is cut or drilled after delivery, the exposed steel should be cleaned and repaired with a suitable zinc-rich coating. Welding also removes zinc from the heated area and requires zinc-rich repair after welding.
Quality Control
Inspection can cover the following items:
Steel grade and material certificate
Web height, flange width and thickness
Straightness and fixed-length accuracy
Zinc coating thickness and coverage
Surface defects, exposed steel and serious coating damage
Hole position, hole diameter and other drawing requirements for fabricated orders
Material certificates and galvanizing inspection records can be supplied for project orders. Third-party inspection can also be arranged when required.
Hot-Dip Galvanized Channel vs Black Channel
Black channel steel has no zinc corrosion-protection layer and normally requires painting or another protective coating for outdoor use. Hot-dip galvanized channel steel receives its zinc coating during factory processing, eliminating the need for a separate full-surface painting process after delivery.
For dry indoor structures, black channel may be sufficient when permitted by the project specification. For outdoor or moisture-exposed structures, the required corrosion-protection system should be specified together with the structural section.
Custom Fabrication and Export Packing
Custom orders can include fixed-length cutting, punching, drilling, bending, beveling, grinding and other processing according to drawings.
For export orders, channel steel can be bundled and reinforced for ocean transportation. Moisture-resistant protection can be used during shipment and storage to reduce handling damage and white-rust risk.
Rongheng supplies steel products from Tianjin Daqiuzhuang and can combine standard channel sizes with fixed-length cutting and project-specific fabrication.
FAQ
1. What sizes of Hot-Dip Galvanized Steel Channel are available?
Common listed sizes are 6#, 8#, 10#, 12#, 14#a and 16#a. Other a/b sections can be discussed according to drawings and requirements.
2. What is the standard length?
Standard lengths are 6 m, 9 m and 12 m. Fixed lengths can be supplied according to the order requirements.
3. What is the difference between Q235B and Q355B?
Q235B is commonly used for conventional structural fabrication. Q355B has higher material strength and is used where the structural calculation requires a higher-strength grade.
4. What zinc coating thickness can you provide?
The standard requirement can be specified as an average zinc coating of ≥85 μm, with local minimum ≥65 μm and cut-end coating ≥45 μm. Coatings of ≥100 μm can be specified for heavier corrosion exposure.
5. Can you cut and drill galvanized channel steel?
Yes. Fixed-length cutting, punching and drilling can be arranged before galvanizing according to drawings. Post-galvanizing cutting or welding requires zinc-rich repair on the affected area.
6. Can hot-dip galvanized channel steel be used outdoors?
Yes. It is intended for applications where the steel is exposed to moisture or atmospheric corrosion. The zinc coating requirement should be selected according to the actual environment.
7. Can it be used for PV structures?
Yes. The listed applications include ground-mounted PV supports, bases and equipment frames. The channel size, steel grade and zinc coating should be specified according to the structural and environmental requirements of the project.
8. What inspection documents are available?
Material certificates, galvanizing inspection records and other agreed quality documents can be supplied. Third-party inspection can also be coordinated when required.
