Seamless Carbon Steel Pipe

We supply hot rolled and cold drawn seamless carbon steel pipes for structural, mechanical and fluid service applications. Available materials include 20#, 45#, Q355B, 27SiMn and 40Cr, with standard and customized sizes for engineering projects, machinery manufacturing and industrial piping.

Seamless carbon steel pipe is formed without a longitudinal weld seam. Hot rolled pipe is generally selected for larger diameters, heavier walls and general engineering use, while cold drawn pipe is used where tighter dimensional tolerances and a smoother surface are required.

The pipe can be supplied to Chinese GB/T standards or to ASTM, EN and JIS requirements according to the application and purchase specification.

GB/T 8162-2018 remains the current Chinese standard for structural seamless steel tubes, while GB/T 8163-2018 is the current standard for seamless steel pipes for liquid service.

ASTM A53/A53M-24 covers both seamless and welded steel pipe, while ASTM A106/A106M-26 specifically covers seamless carbon steel pipe for high-temperature service.

Common materials include 20#, 45#, Q355B (16Mn), 27SiMn and 40Cr. Material selection should be based on strength, machinability, temperature, service medium and fabrication requirements.

Hot Rolled or Cold Drawn?

For large-diameter and heavy-wall requirements, hot rolled seamless pipe is usually the more practical choice. It is widely used in structural members, engineering equipment and general industrial applications where extremely tight dimensional tolerances are not required.

Cold drawn seamless pipe is better suited to smaller sizes, tighter tolerances and machining applications. Its smoother surface and more controlled dimensions can reduce machining work for parts such as sleeves, bushes and mechanical components.

The two processes are not simply different grades of the same product. The choice should be based on the required size, tolerance, surface condition and downstream processing.

Choosing the Right Standard

For structural members, mechanical structures and general fabrication, GB/T 8162 seamless pipe is the appropriate starting point.

For water, oil, gas and other fluid-service applications, the pipe should be ordered to a fluid-service specification such as GB/T 8163. The service medium, design pressure, temperature and required tests should be stated clearly in the purchase order.

For high-temperature service under ASTM requirements, A106/A106M is specifically intended for seamless carbon steel pipe used at elevated temperatures.

Material Selection

20# Carbon Steel is a common choice for general engineering and mechanical applications. It has good machinability and weldability and is suitable for many conventional uses.

45# Carbon Steel has higher strength and hardness and is mainly selected for shafts, sleeves and machined mechanical parts. Welding requirements should be considered before choosing this grade.

Q355B is commonly used where higher structural strength is required, including heavy structures, machinery and outdoor engineering applications.

27SiMn and 40Cr are higher-strength alloy grades used for hydraulic components and other mechanical parts subject to higher strength or wear requirements.

Where It Is Used

Structural Engineering

Industrial plant structures, support frames, bridge members, equipment supports and other load-bearing steelwork.

Machinery Manufacturing

Machine frames, shaft sleeves, hydraulic cylinder blanks, bushes, mining equipment parts and engineering machinery components.

Heavy Equipment and Transportation

Vehicle frames, lifting equipment, agricultural machinery and other fabricated components requiring seamless steel sections.

Fluid Service

Water, oil, gas, steam and industrial fluid pipelines when the pipe is ordered to the applicable fluid-service specification.

Industrial and Municipal Projects

Photovoltaic support structures, municipal steelwork, equipment piping, sleeves and other fabricated steel components.

Wall Thickness and Pipe Selection

Outside diameter alone is not enough to select a seamless pipe. Wall thickness affects pressure resistance, deformation resistance and overall section strength, but the required thickness must be calculated from the actual design conditions.

For fluid service, the calculation should consider design pressure, temperature, internal diameter, material properties, corrosion allowance and applicable piping design code. For structural use, load, span, support conditions and buckling also need to be considered.

This is why a heavier pipe is not automatically the correct choice. The specification should be matched to the actual service conditions.

Processing and Surface Options

We provide cutting, end facing, beveling, rust removal, painting, hot-dip galvanizing and other processing according to project requirements.

For machined parts, cold drawn pipe can be supplied where tighter dimensional control is required. For outdoor structural use, surface treatment can be specified separately according to the required corrosion protection system.

Export orders can be bundled, wrapped and protected against moisture and corrosion for long-distance sea transportation.

Inspection

Inspection can be arranged according to the selected standard and purchase requirements. Depending on the product and application, this may include chemical composition, mechanical properties, dimensional inspection, hydrostatic testing and non-destructive testing.

Inspection documents and third-party inspection by SGS, BV or TÜV can also be arranged when required by the project.

Supply and Custom Orders

Standard sizes can be supplied from available stock where applicable. We also handle project orders requiring mixed sizes, trial quantities, fixed-length cutting, special wall thicknesses or customized processing.

For quotation, provide the pipe standard or application, material grade, outside diameter, wall thickness, length, quantity and required processing. For export orders, destination and packing requirements should also be specified.

FAQ

Q1: What is the difference between hot rolled and cold drawn seamless pipe?

Hot rolled pipe is generally selected for larger diameters, thicker walls and general engineering applications. Cold drawn pipe is produced with an additional drawing process to obtain tighter dimensions and a smoother surface, making it more suitable for precision machining and mechanical components.

Q2: How do I choose between GB/T 8162 and GB/T 8163?

GB/T 8162 is for structural purposes, while GB/T 8163 is for liquid service. The correct standard should be selected from the actual use of the pipe rather than from diameter or material grade alone.

Q3: Is seamless pipe always required for high-pressure applications?

Not necessarily. Pipe selection depends on the design code, pressure, temperature, medium, dimensions, material and required inspection. Where the project specification requires seamless carbon steel pipe for high-temperature service, ASTM A106/A106M is one applicable standard.

Q4: Can the pipe be cut and processed before shipment?

Yes. Fixed-length cutting, beveling, end facing, surface treatment, galvanizing and other processing can be arranged according to the order requirements.

Q5: Can you supply ASTM A53 seamless pipe?

Yes. ASTM A53/A53M covers both seamless and welded steel pipe, so the order should clearly specify the seamless type when this is required.
